Shopping around for a countertop can be a daunting task. With an industry that most people know little about, it can be far too easy to be taken advantage of.
There are some things the consumer should know, some questions that should be asked prior to embarking on this journey.
First, know your measurements. Know how many square feet you have prior to entering a show room or store. Most fabricators price by the square foot, knowing this will help you gauge how much you will be spending before you ever talk to a salesperson.
Second, when given a price per square foot find out what that price includes. Does it include templating, installation, a sealer, an edge profile? This is the easiest way to ‘get one over,’ if you will.
Large companies will make you believe you are getting a deal until they start tacking on all the things that should have been included in your initial price.
Third, what kind of sealer are they using? Does it have a warranty? Does the counter top itself have a warranty and if so what does it cover?
Another very important question is how many seams will be in your counter top and do you get to choose where they are located.
Many fabricators will put far too many seams in your counter top in order to save them on material costs. Understand that some seams are unavoidable, others will be put in to save the fabricator money, know the difference.
Will you be able to review and approve your slab prior to your fabrication? Many natural stones can vary and samples do not always exemplify what your slab will look like. It is important to approve the slab that will be your countertop prior to the stone being cut.
