5 Tips for Going Green in Your Home

By

“Going green” is gaining popularity among homeowners. Most wish lists for homes include energy-efficient features, whether that is found in solar panels or appliances. Going green does not have to cost a fortune or drastically alter your current lifestyle. Here are some tips on how you can be more eco-friendly.
1. Turn things down or off. This is the easiest of the things on the list. When you’re done using something in your home, turn it off or down – including lights. Utilizing natural light will not only cut costs on the electric bill, but also help to heat your home without relying heavily on the thermostat.
2. Change your light bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are not energy efficient. Switch to CFLs, which use 75 percent less energy and last 10 times longer.
3. Laundry. Washing your laundry in cold water saves on your energy bill. Also, line-dry all clothes whenever possible.
4. Buy green products. This includes cleaning products, beauty supplies and home décor. They even have green clothing lines!
5. Buy reusable bags. Instead of using the plastic bags given at the grocery store, bring your own reusable bags. Most grocery stores will even take something off your bill for using your own bags!
