UPDATE: Armed Forces Day Celebration at World War II Lookout Tower Honored Area Veterans

CAPE MAY – On Saturday, May 21, the Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower presented a “Salute to Cape May’s Greatest Generation.”
The Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower, a newly formed group under the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) umbrella, honored Cape May’s World War II veterans and their families in a special ceremony at the World War II Lookout Tower, located on Sunset Boulevard in Lower Township near Cape May Point.
Audrey Conant, Dottie Sandgran Hunter, and Ralph Bakley told first-hand tales of World War II era civilian life in Cape May and area veterans shared their stories with attendees after the ceremony. The Tower was open for free tours throughout the day.

CAPE MAY – The World War II Lookout Tower Museum & Memorial (Fire Control Tower No. 23), located on Sunset Boulevard in Lower Township near Cape May Point pays tribute to the dedicated men and women who have helped preserve our freedom, and stands as a reminder of the Cape May area’s important role during the war years. In honor of Armed Forces Day, the Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower will present “A Salute to Cape May’s Greatest Generation,” a free program at the Tower on Saturday, May 21 at 11 a.m.
The Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower, a newly formed group under the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) umbrella, will honor Cape May’s World War II veterans and their families in a special ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. in the parking lot across from the Tower. The day will include tales of civilian life in Cape May during the war years told by those who lived it including Audrey Conant, Dottie Sandgran Hunter, Ralph Bakley and Tom Hand; as well as music of the World War II Era, free tours of the Tower, several area World War II veterans’ first-hand war stories and World War II reenactors.
The public is invited to become a charter member of the Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower on Armed Forces Day. Those who become charter members by Dec. 31, 2011 will have his or her name permanently displayed in the tower. The Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower is comprised of concerned citizens, families and veterans who seek to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of not only Cape May’s important role in World War II, but also of the traits of patriotism, loyalty and self-sacrifice so evident in the people of these war years.
