Thousands Visit Avalon for Two-Day Holiday Celebration

By Press Release

AVALON — The Borough of Avalon saw thousands of visitors during the two-day holiday weekend Nov. 29 and 30. Avalon held four special events through the weekend, including its popular “Festive Friday” celebration and a brand new “SnowFest Saturday.” All of the events in Avalon were presented by the Borough of Avalon, the 7 Mile Business Community Association, the Avalon Chamber of Commerce, and numerous participating businesses.
Avalon’s new event this year was “SnowFest Saturday” which transformed the athletic field adjacent to the Avalon Elementary School into a giant winter carnival. A skating rink, amusement rides, train ride, giant snow globe, rock climbing wall, and 20 carnival games were presented. All attractions, prizes, and refreshments were provided free to the public during the six-hour “SnowFest Saturday” event.
Once again, thousands of shoppers packed Avalon’s downtown shopping district for the “Festive Friday” celebration the day after Thanksgiving. Free activities for children were presented in front of virtually every Avalon business along the Dune Drive shopping district. The event culminated with the Avalon tree lighting event hosted by Mayor Martin Pagliughi and Santa Claus. Miss New Jersey 2013, Cara McCollum, read a children’s story to begin the tree lighting ceremony which featured holiday music.
More than 600 runners and walkers began the “Festive Friday” celebration with the 2nd Annual Turkey Trot, a 5k run/1.5 mile walk in Avalon. Proceeds from the “Turkey Trot” support the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children in Avalon which provides a free summer vacation to visually-impaired children who may not otherwise enjoy a week at the beach.
The Whitebrier in Avalon was the host of the 7MBCA’s “Festival of Trees” through the weekend. Dozens of trees that were decorated and donated by the business community and individuals were auctioned off to support activities in Avalon supported by the 7MBCA.
