The Truth Came to Bring the Light

By Carol M. McDowell

It seemed an ordinary night
To shepherds guarding their sheep on that vast Judean plain
While in a cave, not far from sight
A virgin bore a son in pain.
The lambs, no ordinary fold
Chosen for the Temple Sacrifice, yearlings chosen spotless and pure
Just so would this “King”-now midst frankincense, gold & myrrh
Be bound-His destiny was sure.
The evil Herod would seek His life
But Angels warned Joseph’s family, “Go ‘til Herod’s last day”
As He grew, Jesus knew favor and grace, not strife
Scribes stared, a child yet He knew far more than they.
His cousin John in the wilderness called the crowds to repent
Depending on God’s provision
Foretold One Greater than he was to be sent
The religious leaders met him with angry derision
To be baptized Jesus came quietly to fulfill the law
John felt Jesus should baptize him that the law was met
But God’s approval was heard  a heavenly dove sent
Jesus left quietly-knowing He faced temptations that day
Tempted with evil powers dark
He conquered each with The Father’s Word that Israel would walk in the Light
So when you’re tried by evil’s night
We too must boldly speak God’s Truth
Be a bright light in the darkness over the land
Bringing Peace where there’s hurt and rage speaking Truth against every lie
Believe and You’re engraved in the palm of God’s hand
THE “Secret place of the Most High”
Dedicated to my friend Nick Thalasinos with whom I worked over 10 years in this county who gave his life for his faith and to help others.
