The Handkerchief

By Pam Schippe

I saw her wear it often
It always caught my eye.
She would wear it with her jumpsuit, almost every time.
Black with tiny flowers running round and round.
A tiny little jewel of sorts, no other to be found.
I hunted here and there for many years to come.
It was an old antique of sorts, an ageless piece of love.
I have wondered just how old this gem, I hold tightly in my grasp.
Could this be a family heirloom passed down from hand to hand?I thought that I could make one, but never found the time.
Such a rare and treasured beauty was very hard to find.
I think that she took notice, how much I like it too.
It was just a matter of time; I didn’t have a clue.
When Christmas came that winter
I found a gift wrapped under the tree from her.
And tucked deep inside the box was this pretty treasure
I had wanted for some time; I can’t tell you
How much it meant to me, more than I can say
This pretty antique hanky, to treasure all my days.
I’ll pass it on to my daughters; I hope that they will know
Just how much this pretty hanky that belonged to their grandmother is now a treasure they now own.
