The Travis Manion Foundation 9/11 Heroes Run
Before leaving for his final deployment, Marine Officer Travis Manion visited Rescue Team 1 in New York City and returned home passionate about why he was fighting in Iraq and committed to ensuring no one ever forgets the service of so many men and women who protect us every day.
Every Sept. 11, communities across the nation are brought together to remember, honor, and support the men and women in the armed forces and first responder communities who protect and serve the country every day.
In 2010, more than 10,000 runners and supporters in six different cities laced up running shoes to ensure we never forget the sacrifices of so many on and since 9111/01.
On the 10th anniversary of 9/11 they continue to demonstrate the strength of spirit. This year, with the public’s support, it is estimated that close to 50 9/11 Heroes Run’s will take place in different communities throughout the country. There are expected to be approximately 25,000 runners and upwards of 100,000 total participants.
The Travis Manion Foundation’s philosophy is to “honor the fallen by challenging the living.” The 9/11 Heroes Run exemplifies this philoso-phy. It is an event that allows anyone to set a reasonable goal and demonstrate their commitment to honoring the sacrifices of our heroes through a physical endeavor – symbolic in nature, but powerful when multiplied individually and by community.
Registration fee supports the continuing efforts of the Travis Manion Foundation. Additionally approximately 20 percent of the proceeds from each race will go to a local charity and a smaller percentage will go to the winning team from the participating fire and police departments. Your fee will also get you a 9/11 Heroes Run T-shirt and, as per our tradition, each registered runner will also get a memento dog tag.
Seventh five percent of the proceeds from the race benefits disabled veterans and 25 percent stays local with the fire company/rescue squad. The pre-registration will take place Saturday 5-7 p.m. and Sunday 7-8:30 a.m. You can also register on-line below. The race begins on First Ave. at 9AM and the 9/11 ceremony will take place at 9:45 a.m. on the stage in front of the firehouse.
Travis and his family often visited Stone Harbor in their happier days and the fire company is proud to be part of this national effort. If you want to register for either the walk or run, you can use the link below. There is also an explanation of the foundation and their accomplishments.
