Seven Mile Island Plans Veterans Day Events

By Herald Staff

AVALON – The borough will hold a Veterans Day ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. to honor the five service branches of the United States military with a special flag raising ceremony.
“Avalon’s Veterans Plaza is a special place for our veterans from Avalon and the entire Seven Mile Island,” said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi.
“Avalon will honor our local veterans from all five branches of the United States military, and fly their respective flags forever to remind residents and tourists alike of the sacrifices our veterans have made to preserve our freedoms.”
The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at Veterans Plaza and include a United States flag raising ceremony by American Legion Post 331.
A special Veterans Day message will be delivered by Mayor Pagliughi, who will also provide a brief history on each branch of the armed forces before flags are raised that represent the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard.
Frank Brad will provide patriotic music and Larry Kenney will play the bagpipes.
There will also be a rifle salute and if conditions permit, a Coast Guard flyover may accompany this special ceremony.
Following Avalon’s ceremony, a second Veterans Day ceremony will be held in Stone Harbor.
Then, American Legion Post 331 will host an open house in Stone Harbor at 12:30 p.m. at 117th Street and Second Avenue.
All events are open to the public.
