Seashore Lines to Run Santa Express

By Herald Staff

TUCKAHOE — A 15 -year Christmas tradition continues as Santa Claus arrives on a historic train in both Atlantic and Cape May counties on Sat., Nov. 27.
The Cape May Seashore Lines’ Santa Express rolls into both the Richland Village and Tuckahoe Village trains stations that morning, beginning four weekends of holiday train excursion service between the two communities. Everyone is invited to join the railroad in welcoming the arrival of Santa for his very first seasonal visit to the region.
All kids, young and old, will enjoy the historic and fun train ride with Santa on board, and he’ll visit with everyone during the trips!
“Throughout the past 14 seasons of The Santa Express, our passengers have become just as much a part of our Christmas tradition as we’ve become of theirs,” said Tony Macrie, President and General Manager of the Seashore Lines. “It’s Christmas holiday fun for the entire family.”
Children are invited to bring their wish-list letters to Santa, and parents (and grandparents!) are urged to bring their cameras and their Holiday Spirit!
“The train typically includes Budd-built Rail Diesel Cars, originally owned by the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines. Sixty years ago, these exact cars began traveling the very same track we will be using today!” Macrie said. “Other cars include a cafe car, built in 1947 for the New York Central System.
This very historic car served on many famous New York Central trains departing Grand Central Terminal in New York City, including the Empire State Express, the Commodore Vanderbilt and the Southwestern Limited. The train is pulled by vintage diesel locomotives,” he added.
The Santa Express departs the Tuckahoe Village train station, Routes 659 / Railroad Avenue and 557 / Mill Road, on: Saturdays, Nov. 27; Dec. 4, 11, and 18, at 10 a.m., 12:40 p.m. and 3:20 p.m; and Sundays, Nov. 28; Dec. 5, 14, and 19, at 11:00 a.m. and 1:40 p.m.
The Santa Express departs the Richland Village train station, U.S. Route 40 / Harding Highway, on: Saturdays, Nov. 27; Dec. 4, 11, and 18, at 11:30 a.m., 2:10 p.m. and 4:20 p.m. (last train of the day, operates to Tuckahoe only); and Sundays, Nov. 28; Dec. 5, 12, and 19, at 12:30 p.m. and 3:10 p.m. (last train of the day, operates to Tuckahoe only).
All operating dates and times are subject to change without notice.
The Seashore Lines is also working on a few special-event Christmas trains that will be announced shortly; and, the railroad Web site: www.capemayseashorelines.orq will have the details.
Tickets for The Santa Express are available online, and online ticket purchases are highly suggested. A very limited number of tickets for each Santa Express train will be available at each station prior to train departure, on a first come basis only. For Santa Express train and ticket information, and online ticket purchases, please visit www.capemayseashorelines.org.
The Santa Express operates rain or shine (and snow, if we’re really lucky…like last year!) This Christmas holiday season, avoid the long wait while standing in line to see Santa Claus, enjoy a comfortable and relaxing train ride while Santa visits with you!
