SEA ISLE CITY – On March 16, Saint Patrick arrived in Sea Isle City one-day prior to his annual feast day. Ireland’s beloved patron saint, portrayed by Joe McGinn, of Merion, PA, was in town to greet spectators along Landis Avenue during Sea Isle’s 23rd Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.
In addition to Saint Patrick, the parade featured the Cape Atlantic Police & Fire Irish Pipe Brigade, Grand Marshall Joseph McLenaghan, Co-Chairpersons Carol Thompson and Ace Morrisey, Boy Scout Troop 76, the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department Explorers Post 1692, and a wide variety of other revelers of Irish descent.
The parade’s “2013 Irish Royal Family” consisted of Prince Jack McGarr, 5, and Princess Kylie McGarr, 3, both of Cape May Court House, and Queen Madison McGinn, 14, of Sea Isle City. The 2013 Irish-American Man and Woman of the Year were Richard and Margaret Mahoney, of Sea Isle City.
Sea Isle’s 23rd Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade was held in memory of Catherine “Kitty” Kelly, a Sea Isle City resident and community volunteer, who recently passed away. Numerous members of Kelly’s family appeared in the parade and along Landis Avenue carrying signs and posters that shouted phrases such as “Our grandmother’s Irish eyes are smiling.”
After the parade culminated at 63rd Street, spectators and participants alike were invited to attend Sea Isle’s annual Irish Celebration inside KIX-McNutley’s, which, like the parade, was hosted by Mayor Leonard Desiderio and his family.
