SEA ISLE CITY- Not even the pouring rain could stop Santa’s annual trek to Sea Isle City for the city’s fifth annual tree lighting.
With a crowd of about 100 of the city’s hardiest in attendance, the Nov. 29th lighting in front of the old Library offered everything the man in red could ask for – kids, cookies, choirs and cocoa.
“We called the North Pole earlier and Mrs. Claus said Santa had already left,” Mayor Lenny Desiderio told the soaked crowd, explaining the reason for having the event in the rain.
The City Hall Solid Gold Singers serenaded Santa with two tunes, the mayor’s daughter, Carmela read “The Night Before Christmas,” local balladeer Russell Briggs sang Christmas carols, and a fire engine, its sirens blaring, rolled in with Santa.
The highlight of the event was the countdown by the mayor and the city’s children as they got ready to throw the magic switch illuminating the city’s tree.
“Four, three, two, one…” And with that the tree was lit, announcing Christmas had officially come to Sea Isle.
