TRENTON — New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner James Simpson today announced that construction projects on roads and bridges will be suspended to help promote safe travel over the Labor Day weekend.
“Suspending work over this final summer travel weekend allows us to maximize roadway capacity for our customers who will be visiting family and friends and taking trips to the many great recreational destinations throughout New Jersey,” said Simpson.
All construction on state highways will be suspended from 6 a.m. Fri., Sept. 3, until noon Tues., Sept. 7.
The commissioner urged motorists to observe speed limits and other rules of the road and to ensure that every vehicle occupant uses a seat belt.
NJDOT offers motorist real-time travel information in multiple formats to help them adjust travel plans in accordance with traffic conditions. Motorists can get the latest traffic information by calling 511 to reach the NJDOT’s interactive telephone line or by going to www.511nj.org
In early August, NJDOT began posting current travel times to various Jersey Shore destinations through NJDOT’s 511NJ web page and phone system. By visiting 511nj.org or calling 511, motorists will see or hear current trip times to Jersey Shore destinations that reflect up-to-the-minute traffic conditions.
Travel-time information is provided along three main corridors to the Shore: the Garden State Parkway, Interstate 195 and the Atlantic City Expressway.
Turnpike and Parkway motorists can obtain real-time information and video images of traffic conditions on those major roadways by visiting the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) website at www.state.nj.us/turnpike. The NJTA greatly increased the video coverage available to motorists earlier this summer, with feeds from 79 cameras on the Turnpike and 70 on the Garden State Parkway.
Nearly 3.8 million motorists are expected to use the Turnpike this weekend, and 7.7 million motorists are expected to use the Parkway.
Drivers are encouraged to call the following numbers for roadside assistance or to report a disabled vehicle, roadside debris or other problems:
– On the Turnpike, call 95.
– On the Parkway, call GSP (477).
– On the Atlantic City Expressway, call ACE (223).
– To report aggressive driving on any road, call 77.
– Motorists should continue to dial 911 for emergencies.
