Knitted Trees May Return to Wilbraham Park This Winter

By Press Release

WEST CAPE MAY — Around Christmas time last year, an anonymous group of revelers came out of nowhere and did something never seen before in Cape May County. The revelers decorated trees in West Cape May’s iconic Wilbraham Park with –gasp!-multi-colored knitting! After leaving their lovey-dovey fashion statement, the loose-knit coalition disappeared into the night.
The trees, newly festooned and bedazzled with color, stood out from the unadorned trees. This seasonal tour de force was the very first time this feat happened in the United States, if not the world (although it was reported that knit-adorned trees first appeared in Philadelphia’s staid Rittenhouse Square). It’s unclear if anyone notified the Guinness Book of World Records about this unique venture.
Nonetheless, two divergent views about the matter emerged. The older generation finds that knitting trees is moderately amusing while the younger think it’s hysterical! Fun!-off-the-wall- knitted trees make Wilbraham Park come alive!
As a new holiday season edges closer, one wonders if the knitters will return to West Cape May? It’s all everyone is talking about. Despite the local clamor, news from the rest of the world indicates a lack of urgency over knitting trees in New Jersey.
Despite this shortcoming, the hoopla over the knitters coming back, in addition to a new set of lights scheduled to go up in Wilbraham for the holidays, has the business community in a tizzy. The merchants view the combination of colored knits and colored lights as a double magnet for drawing tourists to West Cape May—“’tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la, la la la la…”
Moreover, all the trees, decked out in their finest knits, further make Wilbraham Park a must-see destination for the holiday season. Visitors are urged to put it on their bucket list now—before it it’s too late.
