THE WILDWOODS — The Greater Wildwood Fraternal Elks Lodge No. 1896 recently sponsored a holiday decorating contest between students and art teachers from four schools located in the Wildwoods: Margaret Mace, Cape Trinity, Crest Memorial and Wildwood Middle School.
“This will be a yearly event sponsored by the Elks as part of our ongoing youth activities committee and effort to encourage arts in the schools,” said George Greenland, Greater Wildwood Elks Youth Activities Director.
Art teachers from each school selected two of their top art students to compete. Six-foot-by-eight-foot windows facing the Boardwalk between Montgomery Avenue and Burk Avenue at the Wildwoods Convention Center were the canvas on which the students painted original holiday-themed artwork over a two-day period. Six judges from the Wildwoods Convention Center and the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority (GWTIDA) rated the artwork based on creativity, theme and artistic talent; and selected the winners Friday, December 6. The top three winners each were to receive cash awards, with the fourth-place winner receiving Honorable Mention. However, due to a tie in scoring for 3rd Place, both received a cash prize in lieu of a 4th Place honorable mention. In addition, a donation of $100 was given by the Elks to each of the participating school’s art programs to encourage the continuation of arts in the schools.
The Holiday Decorating contest winners were:
1st Place – $150 to Micah Rucci, Margaret Mace School
2nd Place – $100 to Stephanie Black, Cape Trinity Catholic
3rd Place (tie) – $75 to Noelle Johnson, Cape Trinity Catholic
3rd Place (tie) – $75 to Pedro Garcia, Wildwood Middle School
“GWTIDA and the Wildwoods Convention Center are proud to be a part of this community activity and we’re pleased to have the artwork of these talented students displayed on our windows for the entire community to see,” said John Siciliano, GWTIDA Executive Director/CFO.
