By BETH HARRISON
My first New Jersey Christmas was
spent in a borough
called Avalon.
Perched high, keeping watch
over the frosted harbor
in a three-story, dove gray beach house.
Salt air steadily streaming
holiday Springsteen, Lennon, Williams, and
Mathis.
At my side door knocked the Atlantic,
beckoning me to “come and play”
on a quiet off-season beach where
daily there lay new gifts to behold:
dainty starfish,
eye-catching horseshoe crabs,
and the gulls and sandpipers
who flocked to meet the newcomer.
…Years come and years go –
as they do for all of us still.
Each sequential December
sowing new memories
into our minds treasure.
Yet even now –
when shore towns begin to glow and dress
in their Yuletide lights and greens,
my heart hears:
“Welcome to the shore – and Merry Christmas from Avalon.”
