NORTH CAPE MAY – The Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program in Cape May County is hosting the second annual Boat Load of Toys event on Sat., Dec. 10, at Big Lots, 3845 Bayshore Road, North Cape May. Toys for Tots is a nationwide program that collects and distributes new toys for needy children at Christmas time. Toys collected in Cape May County are distributed to children in Cape May County.
Americans of every stripe are encouraged to stop by these two collection events and donate in the form of a new, unwrapped toy, or a contribution in the form of cash or check. Volunteers from the local detachment of the Marine Corps League, along with active duty personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard will be on hand to collect your donations. Additionally, The Coast Guard will bring a Utility Boat to the event in the hopes that local donations will fill the boat, resulting in a “Boat Load of Toys.”
Toys for Tots was founded in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, with support from members of his Los Angeles Marine Corps Reserve Unit, collected and distributed 5,000 toys to local, needy children.
