AVALON- The Borough of Avalon and American Legion Post #331 held a special Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11. The ceremony was held at Veterans Plaza at 21st Street and Dune Drive in Avalon.
“A veteran is a man of peace, soft spoken, and slow to anger”, said American Legion Post #331 Commander Harry Clayton. “He never jokes about war, he’s been there. More than anything else, a veterans loves freedom. He also takes a personal pride in freedom for others”.
Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi delivered an address at the ceremony. “We honor Americans veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and their willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good”, Pagliughi said.
Commander Clayton and Mayor Pagliughi also paused to honor Avalon resident John Fallon. Recently, Fallon was given the highest honor by the French military, the French Legion of Honor, for his service in France during World War II. He receive the honor on Friday in New York City.
The Seven Mile Singers performed patriotic music; the ceremony also included a gun salute, and the playing of “Taps”.
Following the ceremony a second ceremony in Stone Harbor, the Post held an open house at the Stephen C. Ludlam Post #331 at 117th Street and Second Avenue in Stone Harbor.
