In the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, it’s a lovely thing to reflect upon the words of Jean Pierre de Caussade, an 18th century French priest, who wrote of “the sacrament of the present moment.”
Awareness of this phrase has the power to shift our attention from the frenetic pace of holiday activity which, after all, comes from focusing on the future rather than the present. Perhaps, just perhaps, we’ll find it not only possible, but preferable; to give to those we love the gift of our “presence,” rather than the gift of unneeded, expensive “presents” that don’t speak to or from our hearts.
“Presence,” when given from a loving and peaceful heart, recalls those words so appropriate for the Christmas season — “a blessing given is a blessing shared.”
