1st Annual Turkey Trot in Avalon to Be Held Nov. 23

AVALON – Avalon’s first annual Turkey Trot will be held on Fri., Nov. 23, 2012, the day after Thanksgiving. The 5K run/1.5 mile walk will begin at 9 a.m. at 27th Street and Avalon Avenue. All proceeds will benefit the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children.
Registration and Bib pick-up for the Turkey Trot can be picked up on race day starting at 7 a.m. in the Avalon Community Center, 3001 Avalon Avenue. A link to online pre-registration is available at www.dillerblindhome.org/events/ or by emailing acoskey@dillerblindhome.org for a hard copy of the registration form. Pre-registration is $25.00 until Nov. 22 and $30.00 on the morning of the event.
The 5K is a sanctioned USATFNJ Grand Prix event. Awards will be given to the top three men and women overall, and the top three men and women in each age group. Long sleeve t-Shirts will be available on a first-come, first-serve for anyone who registers after Oct. 31.
The Turkey Trot will kick off Festive Friday, Avalon’s version of Black Friday. Festive Friday includes the return of an outdoor ice skating rink on 23rd and Dune Drive as well as a host of other family activities offered in stores and restaurants throughout the day. Since 1972, The Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children, located at 127 26th Street in Avalon, NJ has been providing a seashore escape for visually impaired children, with supervision from experienced and certified counselors and administrators. Since many of these children come from families with limited financial means, the vacation experience is provided to them at no charge. The camp operates for eight weeks during the summer months, from mid-June to mid-August, with approximately 20 children (ages 7 to 15) attending weekly. The Home is a NJ Lions state supported project. Support of The Home is provided by volunteerism, Tim Kerr Charities, Avalon Lions Club, other Lions Clubs, private donations and foundation grants. The Home is a registered 501(c)3 charitable organization under the name “Challenged Children’s Charities Corporation.”
