Nutrition experts often advise people to “eat the rainbow.” That’s an easy way of remembering an important nutritional fact: eating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables every day ensures that you get the vitamins and minerals you need.
Fruits and veggies are vital to your health because they are pure foods, created entirely by nature. That makes them rich in nutrients that help prevent many health conditions, including heart disease, diverticulitis, high blood pressure and vision loss. According to The Cancer Project, the more naturally colorful your meal, the more likely it is to have an abundance of cancer-fighting nutrients.
The color of a given fruit or vegetable helps determine its unique nutritional content. The chart to the left shows examples of foods in each color group and some of the nutrients they contain.
From now on, when planning and preparing meals, “think color,” and try to select at least one serving from each color every day. You’ll find that “eating the rainbow” is a delicious (and fun!) way to achieve greater health.
To learn more about adding colorful vegetables and fruits to your diet, consult your doctor or a professional nutritionist.
