If you find yourself waking up in the morning with a dull headache and jaw pain, you might be clenching or grinding your teeth. This condition is called “bruxism” and some people aren’t even aware it’s happening, especially if it occurs while they are sleeping. The pressure from grinding and clenching can cause damage to the temporomandibular joints (TMJ,) crack or fracture teeth, damage restorations or cause teeth to become worn down or loose. As the tooth enamel is worn away, the underlying layer of dentin becomes exposed, causing the tooth to become sensitive to hot or cold temperatures and pressure. When this happens, root canals, crowns, bridges and even dentures may be needed to restore the damage caused by bruxism.
There are several contributing factors for bruxism including stress, sleep problems, an abnormal bite and crooked or missing teeth. Luckily, there are preventative options your dentist may suggest to save your teeth from wear and tear.
Night guards are commonly suggested to prevent damage caused by clenching or grinding. A night guard is a custom-made appliance that fits comfortably over your teeth while you sleep. Because it prevents contact with the opposing teeth, it relieves some pressure from grinding and clenching. The pressure of clenching and grinding while sleeping is six times stronger than normal biting pressure. This is estimated to create 250lbs of force per square inch and it can last up to 40 minutes per hour of sleep!
Many people who have a high level of stress tend to suffer from bruxism. Finding ways to relax through exercise, reading or listening to music could be helpful, as well as eliminating stimulants like caffeine. Easier said than done, but it might save your teeth from the pressure of clenching and grinding.
It is extremely important to visit your dentist regularly to detect and prevent further damage from clenching or grinding. Your dentist will check for tenderness in the jaw muscles, unusual wear spots on the surfaces of your teeth, and gum tissue abnormalities to determine if you are suffering from bruxism.
