Swine Flu Confirmed at Coast Guard Training Center

By Jack Fichter

CAPE MAY – Coast Guard Training Center Cape May has had two confirmed cases of Swine Flu and 16 recruits with flu-like symptoms.
An isolation ward was set up in a barracks to house any recruits with flu-like symptoms. The two recruits confirmed with Swine Flu have recovered and have resumed their training, to according to Chief Warrant Officer Veronica Bandrowsky. She said 16 recruits were displaying flu-like symptoms and have been tested for Swine Flu. Eleven recruits are currently residing in a fever ward in James Hall at the training center. Five recruits are lodged in the medical ward.
Test results for Swine Flu for the suspected recruits have not been received. Bandrowsky said the test results take three days. A total of 19 recruits and staff members have been tested for the virus, she said.
An email was sent to all staff (permanent party members) last Friday notifying them of a confirmation of Swine Flu case. The email urged careful hygiene such as hand washing and staying home and seeing a doctor if they have flu-like symptoms such as coughing and a high fever. Bandrowsky said three staff members had flu-like symptoms.
Recruits with flu symptoms were told to report immediately to Sick Hall to prevent spread of the illness.
The training center has not stopped receiving recruits which arrive each Tuesday from all over the nation. Bandrowsky said recruits are constantly in a small confined area and eat, sleep, shower, march and exercise together.
Incoming recruits with flu symptoms are being tested for Swine Flu with a throat swab test, she said.
The state Department of Health and Senior Services reported 934 confirmed Swine Flu cases in New Jersey as of July 22 with 15 deaths.
