Stay Fit to Stay Healthy!

Exercise is a key factor in your everyday life. Not only can it make you look better and feel better, but it can also help you combat certain health conditions, diseases and even types of cancer. Here’s what some of our local gym owners in Cape May County have to say about the importance of regular exercise.
Dottie Drake, RN, Owner of Miracles Fitness:
Exercise is absolutely beneficial for cancer patients undergoing treatment. It is proven that a mild exercise program increases your T cells, macrophage and neutrophils which are all important parts of your immune system. Your immune system is what fights infections. Sloan Kettering, one of the premier cancer treatment centers, has a program focusing on exercise as an important part of cancer treatment called the Force program. Patients are guided through a supervised exercise program and nutrition counseling.
Miracles Fitness is a full service health club catering to men and women of all ages looking to improve their health in a non-intimidating and encouraging environment. Dottie Drake has been a registered nurse for over 40 years and founded Miracles Fitness in 1998 to help people get and stay healthy!
Karl J. Belfonti, Exercise Physiologist for The 10th Street Gym:
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, focusing on the need to increase women’s attention on preventative steps for early detection and most importantly prevention. As an exercise physiologist and a regular daily exerciser, I stress the importance of regular physical activity for all ages regardless of age, physical limitations and health status. Regular exercise is an important part of being as healthy as possible. More and more research is showing that exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer coming back (recurrence) if you’ve been diagnosed, as well as reduce the risk of developing breast cancer if you’ve never been diagnosed.
An 8.5 year study followed 59,000 postmenopausal women. During this time, more than 21,000 of the women were diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer. The study showed that women who exercised regularly at least four hours per week in the previous four years were 10 percent less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than those who didn’t. The study further showed that exercise at a modest intensity has a rapid impact on preventing breast cancer, and that there is a need to continue to exercise because this effect quickly diminished after exercise ceased.
Why exercise?
• It reduces the risk of breast cancer.
• It lowers the risk of breast cancer coming back.
• It maintains a healthy weight.
• It eases treatment side effects.
• It boosts your energy.
• Is makes you feel good!
When you first start exercising, seek assistance from a certified fitness instructor who can set you up with a sound exercise program tailored to your needs.
