One in every 20 Americans over the age of 50 has Peripheral Artery Disease (P.A.D.), a condition that raises the risk of heart attack and stroke*. Chronic leg pain affects many people as they get older, and a common cause of chronic leg pain is poor circulation. P.A.D. affects nearly 10 million Americans, and it develops when your arteries become clogged with plaque – fatty deposits that limit blood flow to your legs. Just like clogged arteries of the heart, clogged arteries in the legs mean you are at risk for having a heart attack or stroke. Symptoms include pain, fatigue, burning, or discomfort in the muscles of your feet, calves, thighs or hips that occurs during walking or exercise and goes away after rest. A person experiencing these symptoms should see a vascular physician to be evaluated.
