Open Enrollment for Medicare Beneficiaries

Fall Open Enrollment Period is quickly approaching; during open enrollment Medicare beneficiaries are given the opportunity to make changes to one’s health or prescription drug coverage. Open Enrollment dates are October 15, 2013 – December 7, 2013. In most cases, this may be the one chance you have to make a change to your health and prescription drug coverage for 2014.
The Cape May County Department of Aging & Disability Services will be holding appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning October 15, 2013. To schedule an appointment with a counselor from the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) please call 609-886-8138. The Department of Aging and Disability Services is located in the Social Services Building, 4005 Route 9 South, Rio Grande, NJ 08242.
Medicare beneficiaries can apply for Medicare Savings Programs at any point in time during the year. These programs are available to Medicare beneficiaries who are 65 years old & older & to individuals who are receiving social security disability benefits. These programs are offered by the State of New Jersey which includes the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program for the Aged & Disabled Program (PAAD) & the Senior Gold Program. Both programs are income eligible programs & the income limits for PAAD for a single individual are $25,743 gross income per year & $31,563 gross income per year for a married couple. The income limits for Senior Gold for a single individual are between $25,743-$35,743 gross income per year & between $31,563-$41,563 gross income per year for a married couple. Neither program considers assets.
If you are a Medicare beneficiary, you may also benefit from assistance with your Medicare Part B premium of $104.90 per month. The State of New Jersey offers assistance through the SLMB program also known as Specified low-income Medicare beneficiary program. The income limits for this program for a single individual must be between $11,490-$15,511 gross income per year & one’s assets cannot exceed $7,080. The income limits for this program for a married couple must be between $15,510-$20,939 gross income per year & assets cannot exceed $10,620.
