North Wildwood Hosts Medicine Disposal Day

By Lauren Suit

NORTH WILDWOOD — The city will be hosting Operation Medicine Cabinet, a local collection sit as part of the first statewide medicine disposal day.
The initiative is to organize and encourage residents to properly dispose of their used, unwanted and expired medicine.
“Law enforcement is concerned with the alarming trend in the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs, with potential access to these drugs coming from the medicine cabinets of family and friends,” said Gerard p. McAleer, special agent-in-charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
According to a national study by Drug-Use and Health, 70 percent of people who abuse prescription pain relievers say they got them from friends or relatives. The Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey survey found that half of school principals said that prescription drugs are abused more than twice that of ecstasy and cocaine by Middle School students in this state.
“This operation will reduce the availability of potent drugs that lead kids down a path to addiction,” said Attorney General Anne Milgram. “We can break a cycle of dependence if powerful prescription drugs are stashed in our own homes, tucked away in drawers and cabinets.”
The effort is statewide, with over 420 participating police departments and is being spearheaded by the New Jersey Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration, the state Office of the Attorney General and the Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey.
The collection will take place at the North Wildwood Police Department, located at 305 East 10th Avenue between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Nov. 14.
