By Dottie Drake, RN, Certified Fitness Professional, Cape Regional Miracles Fitness
Over 20 years ago, God gave me a new life mission and I am so grateful. My mission was to stop teaching people how to die and start teaching people to live. I had been an RN for over 28 years and a hospice nurse/administrator for the last 14. My job wasn’t about helping people get well – it was about helping them face death. Back then I wasn’t in the best health myself. I was an overweight, deconditioned 47-year-old taking 12 medications for what I now know were self-inflicted diseases: diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, arthritis, gout, GERD, irritable bowel, insomnia, anemia, anxiety and more. All due to poor lifestyle choices and lack of knowledge. My own health wasn’t a priority. I was sick of death and sickness. I needed to make a change.
I took a stand and opened Fitness First, which is now Cape Regional Miracles Fitness. My mission centered on teaching health accountability and responsibility for all ages, sizes, shapes and ability levels. I learned a lot over those first few years. The most important thing I learned was that I am responsible for my health. Every disease starts in the gut; when I put healthy God-created food in my body, I got healthier; when I put processed, highly chemical, sugary manmade food in my body, I got sick. Every year over the age of 20 without strength training I lost muscle and gained body fat, causing weakness and loss of healthy bone, osteopenia and osteoporosis. These lessons became the basis for our programming.
At Miracles, our focus has always been on health improvement, not vanity and the dreaded numbers on the scale. Our members learn that all can become healthier with a few lifestyle changes. While it may seem scary, small changes make miracles happen. If each day you take one new healthy step, you will see change happen!
Here are some tips for a healthier version of you:
1. Eat breakfast with protein within an hour of waking up.
2. Eat small frequent meals with protein to regulate blood sugar.
3. Eat God-made foods like meat, seafood, dairy, nuts, fruits and veggies.
4. Don’t eat manmade, bagged foods that are artificial, highly processed and heavily loaded with sugar.
5. Get 6-8 hours of sleep.
6. Eat fiber and drink lots of water to move your bowels daily.
7. Take time to move your body daily with cardio, strength training and flexibility exercises. Make sure a professional is guiding your program.
As mentioned above, we are now Cape Regional Miracles Fitness. This partnership was the best decision to serve our community in an even greater manner. We are now your community fitness and wellness club.
