COURT HOUSE – Middle Township School District recently announced the extension of home instruction to accommodate the district’s closure through at least April 20.
According to a release, for younger students, this will include new lessons and activities that will help reduce screen time and boost reading skills.
“We are providing a combination of online and traditional schoolwork/instruction,” stated Principal Chris Paskalides. “Our teachers are doing an amazing job with virtual instruction, but students at the primary elementary level cannot completely rely on virtual instruction.”
In addition to their online lessons, Middle Township Elementary School No. 1 teachers will provide packets of traditional schoolwork for their preschool through second-grade students.
The packets for nearly 700 students will be loaded onto buses, and delivered by the district’s Transportation Department April 1.
All social distancing guidelines will be followed during delivery.
These packets will include brand-new books generously donated by the PTO. Money collected through fundraising activities covered the cost of the books.
“Young students need physical books to practice their reading skills,” stated Paskalides. “Our teachers submitted their students’ reading levels via a Google Doc and we ordered and distributed books based on that level. This also allows us to reduce the amount of screen time for students.”
The books are for students to keep. Based on their grade level, students will receive three to six books each.
