COURT HOUSE – On the first and third Tuesday of each month from October through April, Cape Regional Medical Center becomes the “place to be” for a dozen or more teens. What could catch the attention of teenagers and draw them to their local Medical Center? The answer is rather surprising; it is the opportunity to be mentored and explore healthcare careers, but it is rumored that the chocolate chip cookies are without rival!
Medical Explorers is a “Learning for Life” career-education program for young men and women that is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. Exploring is a catalyst that brings together the quizzical minds of youth, seeking career and educational paths, and the experience of seasoned healthcare professionals. This distinctive partnership offers a unique backdrop for new friendships and also provides the opportunity to receive vital experience in the vast arena of healthcare careers; Cape Regional Medical Center’s Medical Explorer’s program focuses on providing this dual experience. The group explores different elements of healthcare, spending most of their time in a group setting. There is also an opportunity for the individual students to shadow in areas of specific interest as well as participate in various hands on activities. The combination of instruction and on-the-front-line experience provides an understanding of the many opportunities that are available to students as they choose their future careers.
“The program gives the teens the opportunity to choose a career path earlier in their academic journey,” stated Keith Babore, Program Facilitator at the Medical Center. “This helps set the road-map for their curriculum, enabling them to achieve their healthcare career goals much sooner.
