Some sources say as many as 6 million Americans age 65 or older are clinically depressed. Often the signs are overlooked because they are mistaken as byproducts of another illness, or the loss of a loved one. But in fact, clinical depression is a serious concern and requires a doctor’s intervention. Do you know what to look for?
5 Symptoms of Depression:
• Lack of interest — especially in things your loved one usually enjoys
• Irregular sleep schedule — sleeping a lot or experiencing insomnia
• Prolonged sadness
• Withdrawal from social activities
• Weight loss due to lack of eating
Here’s how you can help:
If your loved one is displaying a lack of interest in activities they used to enjoy, engage him or her in something new. Puzzles, scrapbooking and even adult coloring books are all good choices. Group activities, such as bingo or card games, are especially helpful because of the social aspect.
Socializing via digital channels like Facebook can also provide a way to connect with others. In fact, a Pew study found seniors who used Facebook regularly were more apt to also have strong social connections offline.
To establish a regular sleep pattern, suggest a daily routine. Group exercise programs like gentle yoga or chair exercise classes not only promote restfulness, but they may also help stimulate an appetite. To maintain a positive frame of mind in the evening, a warm bath, a cup of chamomile tea, relaxing music and a good book may help.
As a preventive measure, be diligent in engaging your loved one in positive activities and conversation. If your loved one continues to show signs of depression, you may want to consult with his or her doctor.
