COURT HOUSE – Center for Disease Control and Prevention has released reports showing that there has been an increase in flu-like illnesses in the United States, especially the H3N2, a form of influenza A. H3N2 has been shown to be more difficult to fight than other influenza strains.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of patients in the hospital for flu-like illness nationally has doubled in the past two weeks and is 35 percent higher than in recent years. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting the flu vaccine. Cape May County Department of Health has vaccinated 2,925 residents so far, and still has the vaccine available by appointment. Call 609-465-1200 to make an appointment.
“As long as flu viruses are circulating, it’s not too late to get vaccinated, even in January or later,” stated Kevin Thomas, health officer, Cape May County Department of Health.
The flu is spread by droplets, which are made when an individual coughs, sneezes or talks. The droplets can land on surfaces or an individual, which can result in the spread of the infection.
Individuals at the highest risk of developing flu-related complications are individuals 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, pregnant women, individuals with low immune system, and young children. People who have the flu often feel some of these signs and symptoms:
Fever
Cough
Sore Throat
Runny or Stuffy Nose
Muscle or Body Aches
Headaches
Fatigue (very tired)
If you experience any of the symptoms above, please consult your primary care physician about getting tested for the flu and about starting treatment, such as an antiviral drug.
The best way to prevent the flu is by getting an annual flu shot. It is also important to wash your hands, staying home if sick, and covering cough and sneezes.
