Hot Tips to Stay Cool in the Summer

Summer water

By Rachel Shubin

In the height of the summer heat, staying cool and healthy can be tricky but essential. Read these tips to keep your cool this July!
Keep moving
Exercising daily is a surefire way to keep your body feeling its best. Taking walks earlier in the morning or in the late evening is a great time to walk without the high heat of the day.
Stay hydrated
Besides drinking your daily recommendation of eight glasses of water, there is another way to get water and nutrients. Cucumbers, tomatoes, cantaloupes, and watermelon are full of water! These healthy options do not need to be cooked and are easy on your stomach. If you are having trouble getting enough water during the day, mix it up and throw in some frozen berries or lime slices for a twist!
Get cool sleep
Simple, but effective, the average adult needs eight hours of sleep a night, according to the National Sleep Foundation. With busy lives, work and family, getting enough sleep is not always a reality. Keeping a cool room will help you catch some z’s easier. If you do not have air conditioning, opt for an oscillating fan, to help move air around the bedroom. Keeping your windows closed during the day, while seeming counterproductive, keeps out the warm air; open windows at night and place the fan in front of the open window for a cross breeze.
Staying active during the day can get your body pumping, so by the time your head hits the pillow you are tired enough to fall asleep.
Relax in the shade
Sitting in the shade is most peoples’ go to when they are hot outside. Trees provide cooler shade than buildings, because of the process of transpiration. Trees maintain their temperatures while buildings trap heat and emit it back.
Spritzing yourself down with water also helps your body regulate its temperature.
If you start to feel overheated, take note and try to go into a cool area and drink water. Upset stomach, dizziness, and headaches are indications of being overheated.
