CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Cape Regional Physical Therapy has announced the use of Dry Needling for muscle pain. Dry Needling is a term for a skilled therapeutic treatment procedure performed by a Certified Physical Therapist. The procedure involves multiple advances of a filament needle into the muscle area of the body which is producing pain and typically contains a trigger point. There is no injectable solution and typically the needle that is used is very thin.
“Dry Needling is like Acupuncture in the sense that it uses acupuncture needles, but Dry Needling is used to stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular tissues, and connective tissues for the management of neuromuscular pain and movement impairments,” stated Ginger Millar, DPT, Director of Cape Regional Physical Therapy. “It does not have a systemic response like acupuncture does. The procedure is excellent for chronic pain, tendonitis, and muscle tightness.”
Dry Needling can be a powerful adjunctive treatment at physical therapy, though it is important to remember that Dry Needling is only one part of the treatment component. Physical therapy will likely also address biomechanical muscle imbalances, postural dysfunctions, muscular flexibility limitation, and strength deficits. A multi-dimensional treatment approach is paramount for a successful recovery. Singular treatment approaches often only offer temporary relief or fail altogether. Dry Needling is sometimes known as intramuscular stimulation.
The Dry Needling procedure is offered at Cape Regional Physical Therapy—223 N. Main Street, Cape May Court House and 3816 Bayshore Road, North Cape May. Ginger Millar, DPT and Melissa Musser, MPT are both Certified Dry Needling Physical Therapists.
