Doo Dah Earth Day Weekend in Ocean City

By Herald Staff

OCEAN CITY – The DOO DAH PARADE is this Saturday, April 17th. It starts at noon, 6th and Asbury Ave., goes to 12th and Asbury Ave. and concludes at the Music Pier where there is an awards ceremony and the colorful PieAsco, a massive pie smooshing.
At 3 p.m., the City presents the DOO DAH COMEDY SHOW in the Music Pier Auditorium. This show will be dedicated to Ocean City’s good friend, the late Soupy Sales. It will star legendary comedian, Shelley Berman and an array of impersonators of famous comedians.
Soupy’s syndicated TV show was famous for its pie in the face humor with such celebrities as Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. getting plastered. So if we’re going to honor Soupy, we obviously must include some smooshing.
Costello will smear Abbott to vent his frustration after Who’s On First; Joan Rivers will pie Ed Sullivan; Elvis will be smooshed by Ed Sullivan, Lucy will pie Senor Wencus and Wencus will reciprocate by decorating George Burns. All pieings will be woven into hilarious comedy routines. Admission is $10 and tickets will be available at the Music Pier Box Office prior to the show.
The Parade will also feature 500 Basset Hounds, ten musical groups, humorous brigades and floats.
In the event of heavy rain, all events will be moved to Music Pier auditorium, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace at 1 p.m. Parade celebrities and performers will be introduced and there will be an awards ceremony. The PieAsco will be held in the Pavilion area of the Music Pier followed by the comedy show at 3 p.m.
The City’s 4TH ANNUAL EARTH DAY CELEBRATION is set for Sun., April 18 starting 11 a.m. at the Bayside Center, 525 Bay Ave. Admission is free.
There will be exhibitors in a large tent featuring environmental products and giveaways.
The Family Island End to End Bike Tour will conclude at Bayside. A live remote by WIBG and a performance by the Turtle Singers is set for 11 a.m.; environmental awards and recognition of guests is set for noon; there will be a lecture series on the first floor of the Bayside Center from 12:45 p.m. until 3 p.m. and Mascot Races at 1 p.m.
Mascots who will compete and pose for photos include Mr. Peanut, Trash Buster, the Shriver’s Taffy, Jilly’s French Fry Guy, Scute the Wetland’s Institute Turtle, the Air Circus Pirate, Wonderland’s Wonder Bear, the ACUA Super Can and Bobby, the City’s Nor’Easter’s Soccer Club mascot.
There will be children’s activities, arts and crafts, environmental displays, food and refreshments. The lively and original pop band, 1-2-3 Draw will entertain.

All participants receive I Was A Hotdog For a Day T shirts and a hotdog lunch courtesy of Dietz and Watson, our major sponsor.
