SEA ISLE CITY — The City of Sea Isle City and AARP Chapter 710 will hold their ninth annual Heart 5K Run and Fun Walk on June 5. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the day of the event on the Promenade at JFK Boulevard, with the 5K Run slated to take off at 9 a.m., followed immediately by the Fun Walk.
A donation of $20 is asked for runners and $10 for walkers, with children under 12 years participating for free. This event benefits the American Heart Association of South Jersey.
The 5K Run and Fun Walk is being held in honor of Gerard Desiderio, the older brother of Sea Isle City mayor and County Freeholder Leonard Desiderio. Gerard, who died of a heart condition in 2003, was head of the Cape May County Bridge Commission at the time of his death.
A long-time member of the Sea Isle Ambulance Corps and a very active community volunteer, he was also head of family businesses, including the Sea Isle Inn and Kix/McNutley’s Package Goods and Night Club.
“We are very pleased to add Gerard’s name to our Heart 5K Run and Fun Walk,” said Mary Ellen Stefenack, president of AARP Chapter 710 of Sea Isle City. “He was very devoted to the community.”
At registration, participants will receive free tee-shirts, bagels and bottles of water, while supplies last. Male, female and youth first, second and third place winners of the 5K Run will receive medals. Runners will begin on the promenade at JFK Boulevard, proceed to 57th Street and continue south on Pleasure Avenue to 69th Street, where they will then turn north and return to the starting line.
Ernie Marcacci, a local volunteer and friend of the Desiderio family, will lead the 5K Run on a bicycle. Call (609) 263-2968 for more information.
