COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Freeholder Kristine Gabor invites the public to participate in the county’s first Breast Cancer Awareness Walk to take place at the Cape May County Park and Zoo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sat., May 5, 2012.
Aside from celebrating Mother’s Day in May, the state has designated May 20th as Breast Cancer Survivor Day. This walk, coordinated by the Cancer Education and Early Detection Program of the Cape May County Department of Health, is intended to increase public awareness about the risk factors of Breast Cancer and the need for research and a cure.
Cape May County Health Officer Kevin Thomas said, “Breast cancer ranks second among cancer deaths in women after lung cancer. Although 99% of all breast cancers occur in women, men can get breast cancer too. It is important that everyone is aware of the risks.”
Walk registration starts at 10 a.m. followed by a warm-up session. The walkers will proceed around the park area at their own pace. They will be given a free pink t-shirt (while supplies last) and other give- away items. Educational signage will be posted along the trail and breast cancer educational material will also be available.
“Having a breast cancer survivor in my own family, I understand the importance of the continuing mission of breast cancer awareness and am proud that our County is sponsoring this event,” added Freeholder Gabor.
This is a perfect opportunity to come out and support breast cancer awareness and enjoy the county’s free park and zoo. For additional information, please call 463-6521 or visit cmchealth.net.
