Summer has arrived and we are spending most of our days outdoors. Keeping your skin healthy requires some planning. Here are our top skin care tips for the summer season!
What to know about sunscreens: Recent studies show that many consumers are confused when it comes to purchasing sunscreen. SPF (sun protection factor) only refers to UVB not UVA protection. Look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays. UVA penetrates the skin deeper and is responsible for signs of aging (age spots, wrinkles, blotchy skin, etc.). UVB causes sunburn. Both UVA and UVB are linked to the development of skin cancer. Apply a daily SPF 30 broad spectrum sunscreen (1 oz. for an adult). Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Those with sensitive skin can use MD Solar Sciences Mineral Lotion or Elta MD Pure, and those with a more active lifestyle can use MD Solar Sciences SPF Stick or Elta MD Spray.
What to know if you get a sunburn: Following a burn, the skin is inflamed. Cool it down by applying cold compresses that can be soothing. Soaking in a cool bath for 15-20 minutes can soothe pain and itching. You can try adding baking soda or Aveeno oatmeal to your bathwater. Avoid strong soaps and bubble baths that can dry and irritate burned skin. Use a mild brand soap and rinse it off thoroughly. If you don’t have an aloe allergy, apply refrigerated pure aloe vera gel (available in pump bottles at most drug stores). Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to counteract the drying effects of sunburn. Aspirin or ibuprofen can help relieve pain, itching and swelling. If you have severe or blistering sunburn with fever or chills seek medical attention.
Childhood sunburns are a risk factor for developing skin cancer later in life. As parents or grandparents, we teach our children about the meaning of healthy habits such as not smoking, eating healthy and being active. We must encourage the same healthy habits with sun protection. Look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays. UVA penetrates the skin deeper than UVB and is responsible for signs of aging (age spots, wrinkles, etc.).
