TRENTON –– A local support organization was one of 21 county rape care programs and three statewide programs to receive a share of over $2 million in rape care capital grants.
The Coalition Against Rape and Abuse (CARA) is slated to receive $83,740 from the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) program.
DCA Acting Commissioner Joseph Doria announced the awards in a press release Oct. 30.
“Governor Corzine and the legislature continue to invest in programs that provide crucial support to New Jersey residents in
need,” Doria said.
“These grants will allow organizations to strengthen the essential rape care services they provide to victims and their families as well as educate the public to prevent further instances of sexual violence.”
According to the release, the Rape Care and Primary Prevention Program 2008 grants are comprised of two components: one
for direct services to victims and another for rape prevention, education and assault hotlines.
CARA was founded 23 years ago to provide free, confidential support services to victims and survivors of domestic violence
and sexual assault in this county.
CARA programs include a buddy group for survivors of domestic violence, a group of survivors of sexual assault and a bilingual
outreach program.
The group also offers crisis intervention, counseling, education, referrals, advocacy, food bank, clothing boutique and residential services for those who cannot live safely in their current situation.
