The Community Foundation of South Jersey (CFSJ) has awarded grants to 14 organizations in Camden, Burlington, Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem, Atlantic, Cape May, and Ocean Counties. These grants, totaling $97,500, were made possible through funding from the Ford Foundation, The Mildred Stiles Michael Fund and two anonymous Cumberland County donor funds. This allocation – which included grants to A Place For Us Atlantic County Women’s Center and the Cape May County Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Inc. – is the first by CFSJ since it began operating in 2009.
The CFSJ grantmaking committee received 68 proposals and selected 14 (see below) based on their ability to address two focus areas. According to Kim Warker Ayers, CFSJ’s Grantmaking Committee Chair, this first round of grants targeted family stability and social equity. “We were looking for programs that contributed to a cohesive, supportive and flexible family system as well as a nurturing and stimulating home environment. With social equity we sought organizations impacting the fair, just and equitable access to opportunity to achieve and sustain self-sufficiency.”
A Place for US Atlantic County Women’s Center received $5,000 for its Home to Work program, which offers families at-risk, a variety of services including counseling, life skills development and educational programs. Cape May County’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Inc. received $5,000 to support their Strengthening Families Program, which provide a curriculum for family-skills building and teen substance abuse prevention.
“It is critical to CFSJ’s mission that the entire region we serve benefit from our grant investment,” said Sidney Hargro, CFSJ Executive Director. “Simply put, our grantmaking goal is to increase the level of philanthropic investment in South Jersey. To that end, we are pleased that we could use seed funds from a national foundation to leverage funds from donors who also care about family stability and social equity.”
The Community Foundation of South Jersey is a nonprofit, public charity that enables a broad cross-section of donors to easily and effectively support causes they care about, immediately or through their wills. Created by and for the people of South Jersey, CFSJ is the first community foundation dedicated to the people and communities in Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean and Salem counties. http://www.communityfoundationsj.org
