WHITESBORO — Camp Unity, in its fifth year, brought 40 young men from Raleigh-Durham, N.C. to this community Thur., Aug-4 and Fri., Aug 5 to learn what colleges in South Jersey offer then play a little basketball in the afternoon.
Returning to his hometown from North Carolina with his D3 (Desire Determines Development) group of teens, ranging from freshmen through seniors, was Malcolm Reed, a 1998 Middle Township High School graduate who played basketball under Coach Tom Feraco.
Based at Martin Luther King Community Center under direction of Robert Matthews assisted by Daniel Auld, the camp lets local hoopsters meet their peers from the Tarheel State.
Keeping the crowd up to the minute on players and scores was Melly Saunders.
On Aug. 4, the campers visited Gloucester County Community College. The next day, they planned to visit Rowan University, according to Reed. The event also allowed sufficient time for the visitors to head to Wildwood for a relaxing time at Morey’s Piers.
Games were scheduled hourly from 4 until 7 p.m., according to Matthews.
“It’s not just basketball,” said Reed. “We try to teach life success through basketball. We want to help get the kids in college. We teach them how to be productive members of society,” Reed added.
Accompanying the 40 players were 10 chaperones.
Reed said D3, a non-profit organization, would mark its sixth anniversary Sept. 29.
