At Last: Blueberry Season is here. The beginning of blueberry season is a very special occasion in my household. This is because my daughter enjoys finishing off a pint of these delicious little berries at a time. Little does she know that these dark blue berries are a veritable super food. The chemical compounds in blueberries responsible for their healing ability are known as Anthocyanins.
These compounds when consumed work their way into the very tiny blood vessels and surrounding tissues of the body to provide a protective antioxidant action. This allows the body to have healthy and vigorous blood circulation, which benefits all bodily systems especially the cardiovascular.
Blueberries are helpful in cases of diabetes where the peripheral micro circulation is impaired. In cases of Macular degeneration this same blood vessel strengthening ability prevents this debilitating condition from progressing. It has long been known that blueberries are a tonic for the vision and promote night vision. An anecdotal story from World War II confirms this.
It was noted that British pilots demonstrated exceptional accuracy during nighttime bombing runs. A study was performed and concluded that the pilots accuracy was related to their consumption of blueberry and bilberry (a cousin species) jam on their muffins daily.
I recommend patients consume blueberries freely in season and to buy organic frozen blueberries the year round. On a side note, if you can find the organic variety of blueberries they are much preferred.
Blueberries are on the “dirty dozen list” of fruits and vegetables that absorb pesticides most readily.
So ask your local grocer, farm stand, and even farmer for organic please!
