Pet therapy provides well known health benefits to people of all ages. Lowered blood pressure, swift recovery and longevity are just a few of these. Autumn Lake Healthcare at Oceanview celebrated the 11th birthday of its therapy dog in patriotic style with residents and families. Everyone was decked out in red, white and blue and enjoyed meatball and chicken finger appetizers – Gilligan’s favorite foods! Before the birthday cake was served, they played trivia, won prizes and received special gifts commemorating the annual event.
“I look forward to this every year,” said Mary Lou Clayton, resident council president. “He’s a ham! We just love him and his costumes!” she added. The expressive Boston Terrier has won several awards for his therapy work which began when he was just 11 weeks old. “I love to see him walk into work! He makes me laugh,” said Edna Galbraith. “He knows me, he’s my little buddy.” The dog enjoys his daily work at Autumn Lake and brings smiles to the faces of everyone he encounters.
Interactions with the dog make visiting and conversation easier for residents and their families. It gives seniors a talking point with guests, and often makes coming to a healthcare facility fun for children. Residents enjoy the memories or their own pets and tell stories about them as they stroke the dog. Resident John O’Conner noted that the dog is now 77 in people years. “He should get his Medicare card. He’s in the right place!” he joked.
