AtlantiCare is holding two contests on Facebook aimed at creating awareness about the importance of dialing 911 for stroke symptoms.
Through May 18, AtlantiCare is asking those 18 and older to submit videos or art illustrating the importance of dialing 911 for stroke symptoms. Parents or legal guardians can submit works on behalf of those younger than 18.
First place prize for art will be two tickets to the June 7 Philadelphia Phillies game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Philadelphia, courtesy of the Phillies, and a $300 gift card. First place prize for best video will be a $350 gift card. Second place prizes for each contest are $200 gift cards.
Original works of art or videos should depict one or all of the following
• Importance of dialing 911 for stroke symptoms.
• Stroke symptoms.
• Stroke risk factors.
The contest is one of several ways AtlantiCare is marking National Stroke Awareness Month in May.
“Stroke knows no age limit and it is increasing striking younger people,” explained Marisa Scibilia, MSN, APN, C, program director, AtlantiCare Neurosciences Institute. “We’re planning activities ranging from contests using social media to lectures and health assessments. We want the community to understand how they can prevent stroke and why it’s important to dial 911 for stroke symptoms, face their risk, and help us spread this important message.”
Getting immediate medical care is critical. It can mean the difference between complete recovery and a lifetime of serious disability. If you or someone you know experiences any of the following symptoms, dial 9-1-1 immediately:
• Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face.
• Sudden numbness or weakness of an arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
• Sudden trouble walking.
• Dizziness.
• Loss of balance.
• Loss of coordination.
Stroke risk factors include, but are not limited to:
• Age – risk increases with age, however, more young people – including those in their 40s and 50s.
• Family history of stroke.
• Race.
• Having had a stroke.
• Having heart disease.
• Having had a heart attack.
• Having high blood pressure.
• Being a smoker.
• Having diabetes.
• Having high blood cholesterol.
• Obesity.
• Physical inactivity.
