Annual 5K Run and Walk in Sea Isle City Will Raise Funds for the American Heart Association

By Press Release

SEA ISLE CITY – According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease and stroke are the top causes of death in New Jersey. To raise funds for heart disease research, the City of Sea Isle City and Sea Isle’s AARP Chapter 710 will host the annual Gerard Desiderio 5K Heart Run and Walk on Saturday, June 4. The yearly race and walk-a-thon will take place on Sea Isle City’s oceanfront Promenade at JFK Boulevard beginning at 9:00 a.m. There will be no pre-registration for either the run or the walk. Registration will begin on the day of the event at 8:00 a.m. The donation to participate will be $20 for runners and $10 for walkers. Proceeds will go directly to the American Heart Association.
Medals will be presented to the top three athletes of the 5K in both male and female divisions. There will also be awards presented in youth and senior divisions. To keep all participants energized, bottled water and bagels will be distributed while supplies last. Participants will also be given tee shirts, which will be donated by the Desiderio family in honor of the event’s namesake.
Gerard Desiderio was a long-time resident of Sea Isle City who was very active in his community before passing-away from heart disease in 2003. In addition to being the co-owner of Sea Isle’s KIX-McNutley’s Night Club with his brother, Sea Isle City Mayor Leonard Desiderio, Gerard was also an integral member of the Sea Isle Ambulance Corps and the Chairman of the Cape May County Bridge Commission at the time of his death. Additionally, he was the former chairman of the Cape May County Regular Republican Organization, the longest-standing president of Sea Isle’s Italian American Club, a past president of The Antique Auto Club of America/Jersey Cape Region and an active fund-raiser for Saint Augustine School in Ocean City. He left behind a wife and two young sons.
