More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s Disease today. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. This disease is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual disabilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. A common myth of Alzheimer’s Disease is that it is a normal part of aging. However, this debilitating disease is NOT a normal part of aging, although the greatest known risk factor is increasing age. It is a progressive disease where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. Common symptoms include memory loss that interrupts daily life, confusion with time or place, misplacing things and losing ability to retrace steps, changes in mood and personality, decreased or poor judgment and withdrawal from work or social activities.
As of today, Alzheimer’s has no current cure, therefore research needs to continue. There is a worldwide effort under way to find better ways to treat the disease, delay the onset and even prevent it from developing.
To make a donation or to find out more about Alzheimer’s Disease symptoms and care, please contact either Lisa Hagan at Victoria Manor at 898-0677 or Pat Roach at North Cape Center at 898-8899.
