5K Run in Sea Isle City Raised Over $4000 for Breast Cancer Research

By Press Release

SEA ISLE CITY, NJ – On Oct. 8, athletes from across the region gathered on Sea Isle City’s Promenade for the 2011 Charlotte Moretti Race for the Cure 5K Run and Fun Walk. Sponsored by AARP Chapter 710 of Sea Isle City, this year’s event raised over $4000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation of Central and South Jersey. According to organizers, much of that money was the result of entry fees collected from participants, who each received a free tee shirt and snacks on the day of the race; and a sizeable portion of those funds came directly from local business sponsors and other donors.
The event’s many participants included several groups of walkers, who clearly enjoyed the day’s sunny skies and mild autumn temperatures. Among those in attendance were members of Sea Isle’s weekly aerobics class, also known as the “Aerobics Chics,” who often support local charitable efforts.
Also in attendance were supporters of Laura DiPrima, a school teacher from Mantua, NJ, who lost her battle with breast cancer earlier this year. DiPrima and many of her loved ones also participated in the 2010 Charlotte Moretti Race for the Cure, and family members, friends and several of her students were happy to once again walk in her honor this year. “We’re here for Laura!” they said.
The overall winner of the 5K Run was Ryan Myers, 35, York, PA. Finishing behind Myers was Brian Dudley, 33, Del Haven, NJ, second place, and Jenifer Meyer, 36, Perkiomenville, PA, third. Each winner received a medal trimmed with pink ribbon (for breast cancer awareness) and the heartfelt thanks of AARP Chapter 710 members.
Medals were also distributed to the top 5K athletes in several divisions. In addition to Myers and Dudley, the fastest runner in the Men’s Division was Brian Kavanagh, 41, Egg Harbor Township. In the Women’s Division, Jenifer Meyer was joined by Pamela Pacifico, 38, Palermo, NJ, second place, and Phyllis Bunte, 44, Sparks, MD, third.
In the Seniors Division, Lou Dayer, 67, North Wildwood, came in first place, followed by Joe Crowne, 64, Yardley, PA, second, and Paul Roedell, 76, Egg Harbor City, third.
In the Youth Division, Maggie McGinn, Ewing, NJ, was the first place winner, followed by Marissa Pacifico, 10, Palermo, NJ, second, and David Brown, 14, Pottstown, PA, third.
