High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is all the rage for 2018, using alternating bursts of short, intense exercise with less intense recovery periods to give you big results in less time.
HIIT is one of the top exercise regimens sweeping athletic training centers across the country, due to its proven ability to burn more fat in less time. This type of training keeps your heart rate up, resulting in optimal muscle building and retention coupled with greater fat loss and increased calorie burn. Four reasons to consider HIIT in 2018 (and beyond):
1. Quick and Convenient. Super-efficient HIIT is the best workout for a busy schedule. HIIT workouts can be done anywhere, anytime. Most can be done in under 30 minutes and I’ve seen very effective HIIT programs that take just 15 minutes or less to complete.
2. No equipment? No worries! HIIT workouts can be completed using just your body weight! High knees, fast feet, running, lateral jumps or any plyometric exercise is all you need for an effective workout. Remember, the focus is on getting your heart rate up and keeping it there.
3. Lose Weight, Not Muscle. Studies show that steady cardio is associated with losing muscle. The shake-up of a HIIT workout’s intense exercise with less intense recovery periods allows you to preserve hard-earned muscles while ensuring most of your weight loss comes from fat stores.
4. Increase Your Metabolism. HIIT stimulates HGH production (amino acids secreted by the pituitary gland), which provides a major boost to your metabolism for 48 hours after completing your routine, allowing you to burn extra calories and fat long after the training session is over.
The Bottom Line
If you are short on time but want big changes in 2018, consider trying short yet intense HIIT. Yes, you will be working hard the entire time, but the results are well worth it. It’s a great way to keep your workouts fresh and enjoyable, but more importantly HIIT produces many of the same health benefits as other forms of exercise, faster.
