OCEAN CITY — The final tally is in after three Open Houses at the Ocean City Fishing Club: 1,856 visitors and 412 pounds of non-perishable food donated to the Ocean City Community Food Cupboard.
As part of the 100th anniversary of its founding in 1913, the club has held the Open Houses this summer at its clubhouse and pier near 14th Street and the Boardwalk. The last one, on Aug. 22, attracted 681 visitors in spite of threatening skies and intermittent rain. They also brought 172 pounds of food and cash donations for the Community Food Cupboard, which is maintained by the Ocean City Ecumenical Council, Inc.
The first Open House on July 7 drew 543 men, women, and children and 100 pounds of food during a two-hour period. The second event, on July 27, attracted 632 people who contributed 140 pounds of food. Among the visitors to the second and third events was Ocean City and OC Chamber of Commerce mascot Martin Z. Mollusk.
At the Open Houses, club members welcomed visitors and took them on guided tours to the end of the 635-foot fishing pier.
According to club president Paul Keuerleber, many of the visitors were local residents who said they always wanted to know what it was like to walk out onto the pier.
The club’s next major event is a first-ever, three-day Centennial Surf Fishing Tournament Oct. 17-19. It will include an evening tackle show that will be open to the public at the Sports and Civic Center on Oct. 18. During the tournament, club members will also solicit donations for the Food Cupboard.
