The summer of 2013 is shaping up to one of the best ‘memory makers’ in recent years. There’s another 10 pound plus flounder to shout about. There’re tuna, kingfish, croakers, and tile fish, too.
Plenty of flounder, some weakies, croakers, and sea bass can be had in the back bay and off the pier at Grassy Sound Marina. Pearl white Gulp produced some nice flounder and weakies, with fish caught right off the docks. There are loads of crabs and spot off the fishing pier, too.
Gary and Sandy Errickson, Goshen, caught two weakfish to 3.2pounds and a 4+ pound flounder fishing near marker 442, incoming tide. Nicholas Capucci, Macungie, Pa., with Joey and Veronica McAllister, caught a 21 inch flounder on a minnow off their boat at the marina, incoming tide. Justin Tomlin, 7, Goshen, caught two keepers behind N. Wildwood, incoming tide.
Tom Peters, Lansdale, Pa., fishing on a rental boat with Evan, Jack, and Sean, caught a 24 inch flounder in Turtle Creek on clam, incoming tide. First fishing trip for Tiernee and Cody Rue, 3 & 5 years-old from Philadelphia, took them to Turtle Creek where they caught 12 croakers.
Sterling Harbor Marina reports continued good results with the Cape May Reef, Wildwood Reef, Reef Site 11, and the Old Grounds all producing nice flounder. The action in the back bays slowed as the flounder start moving towards the ocean. There are plenty of schoolie size stripers in the back bays hitting Gulp!, and top water plugs such as Super Spook, Jr.’s.
The tuna action has been off and on, but bluefin are reported from the Hot Dog, Massey Canyon and the inshore lumps and yellowfin are being caught at the Canyons. White Marlin are starting to show up at the Canyons. Bob Fritz, Philadelphia, landed his first white marlin while trolling between the Baltimore and Wilmington Canyons.
The warm weather and warm water temperatures have slowed things down for fly-fishing, too, but Captain Ray says they are still catching weakfish and fluke around the inlet and beach front, mostly small, with a decent fish here and there. Still chartreuse/white clousers for the fly fishermen and gulp baits fished on jig heads for the spin anglers are working best. Ray is still catching stripers in the back bay areas, strickly dawn or fishing at dusk as they do not like the warm water or bright sun during the day. For stripers, popping flies on floating lines are working for fly anglers, and popping and swimming plugs are doing it for spin anglers.
