The Fishing Line: Labor Day Worth the Work

By Carolyn Miller

Labor Day Weekend ahead. Back to school blues? Shake them off with a nice fishing trip. Warm sun, a gentle breeze and a fish on your line. That’s the way to say good-bye to the official summer season.
Grassy Sound Marina is seeing plenty of happy fishers. Sheepshead are being caught near the bridge abutments on clams and shedder crabs, porgies on minnows, outgoing tide, and flounder, sea bass, spot, and crabs hanging strong in the back. Michael Fenour, Belair, Md., caught a 22 inch flounder behind N. Wildwood on minnows, incoming tide and Ashleigh McHenry, Grassy Sound, caught a 23 incher at 4 pounds at the Cape May Reef on squid and minnows. Joe Pryor, Southampton, Pa. had 3 keeper flounder at the Cape May sea buoy while Gary Errickson, Goshen, got his 3 keepers at marker 442. Not to be outdone, Peter Jargowski, South Dennis, caught a 24 inch flounder on minnows near the spoils site behind Stone Harbor.
Fishing from the Grassy Sound Pier, folks are finding porgies using minnows at outgoing tide. Dave French, N. Wildwood caught 4 shorts and 1 keeper flounder on minnows, incoming tide and Joan Hackl, Mantua, caught a 19” flounder on mackerel.
Cape Queen Fishing Charters took the McGovern party out for an afternoon trip fishing for bluefish and had fun catching about 30-40 overall. On another trip, Vince DiGiamo took family and friends out for a trip to catch some bluefish. Vince, Anthony, Pat and Rick caught their share but it was the young ones, Ricky and Michael who tied for heaviest fish at 2.1 pounds each. Way to go kids.
The surf is producing spot, kingfish, and croakers. Fluke are playing on the wrecks. Out at the cigar and the lump the water is as clear as can be. Tuna, Mahi and Wahoo, if you are lucky.
Sincere condolences to the family of Lou Rodio who passed away Aug. 15. Lou will certainly be missed by the fishing community.
